Parents,

Thank you so much for another great year at Lake View Elementary.  Our students have done such a great job this year!  They have worked very hard.  I also wanted to make sure you all know about the great work that your PTA and community council have done this year.  Because of our PTA, we have had a fun carnival, Red Ribbon Week, Green Ribbon Week, the bike rodeo, class parties, SEP dinners for the teachers, teacher recognition week and a very successful fund raiser.  The PTA fund-raiser pays for our field trips, so make sure you tell them thank you!

The community council is in charge of the land trust plan.  With their support, Lake View implemented a new small group reading instruction plan this year.  These groups are being done in a way that hasn’t been attempted in our district before.  We are focusing on specific reading skills rather than reading levels.  We hired a few new aides and shifted a few other aides over to help run these reading groups.  The result is that for 45 minutes a day, every student in grades 1-3 is in a reading group addressing their specific skill need.  Kindergarten students are also in skill based groups that last about twenty minutes.  We have been monitoring the progress of our students and they have already made tremendous strides in their reading.  We plan to continue with these groups next year and hope that they will be even more effective.

As we enter the summer break, please encourage your student(s) to read.  I hope you have a lot of fun with your families and enjoy the summer!

On Friday, April 10th the Utah State Board of Education unanimously approved that a draft of updated Utah state science standards for grades 6-8 be available for a 90-day public review. The State Board is now asking that all interested parties look over the drafts and provide constructive feedback for improving  them.  The drafts and feedback tool are available on the USOE website at: http://schools.utah.gov/CURR/science/Revision.aspx.

Additionally, a representative from the Utah State Office of Education will be holding public meetings throughout the state. The purpose of this meeting will be to collect feedback regarding the new draft 6-8 Utah science standards from interested public. If a member of public desires to provide feedback but cannot make the meeting, we recommend using the online feedback tool available on the USOE website at: http://schools.utah.gov/CURR/science/Revision.aspx.

All meetings will start at 7pm and last at least one hour.

Parents,

Our annual writing assessment for all students in grades 3-5 will be conducted between February 10th and February 20th. Please make sure your student gets plenty of sleep and eat breakfast so that they can do their very best work. They have been working hard at improving their writing skills and we are very proud of them.

The PTA is sponsoring a fundraiser.  Our students have the opportunity to sell chocolate bars.  The chocolate will be sent home on Friday the 30^th with the students who are selling.  In order to sell, a student must turn in a blue permission slip signed by their parents.  The fundraiser will run from January 30^th until February 13^th.

Attention Parents,

Lake View Elementary will be administering the SAGE writing test to all students in 3^rd – 5^th grade.  Testing will be held from February 10-February 20.  The SAGE writing assessment is a new and challenging writing assessment that every student in Utah in grades 3-12 will be completing.  The test is taken on the computer and is based on curriculum that is taught that year in school.  Obviously, more is expected of a fifth grader than would be of a third grader.  Students will be asked to complete two separate writing tasks.  One will be persuasive in nature and the other informational.  Our students and teachers have been working hard to prepare for this test.  We appreciate their efforts!

Principal's Message

September 2014

Dear Parents and Students,

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!     

Lake View enjoyed a wonderful school year last year and we hope that 2014-2015 will be just the same.  This past year, our students achieved some awesome academic results.  From the beginning until the end of the year, our students improved in reading accuracy by 29%.  As a school, we improved in overall math proficiency by 4%  The average student at Lake View achieved one and one half year’s growth in math this past year.  Our 5^th graders once again showed off their writing abilities as 80 out of 83 of them scored proficient or higher on the annual direct writing assessment.  The average score on this test went up from 23.7 to 25 out of 30 this year.  We are all celebrating these achievements!  The former district superintendent, Mr. Ron Wolff, recently sent us a congratulatory letter in which he cited the tremendous growth in academic achievement of Lake View students. 

I also want to remind you of your rights as a parent. If you ever have questions regarding your child’s educational performance or what they are being taught, please just drop in or send us an e-mail. We will be happy to answer your questions. Your child has a right to quality instruction that is centered on rigorous curriculum with high standards and relevance.  The focus of this instruction is literacy and numeracy to promote economic prosperity, citizen participation, strong moral and social values, and commitment to constitutional government. We believe that educational success is most likely to be achieved when we develop a partnership. We hope to develop and nurture those relationships.  Please keep us informed of your child’s needs or any impactful changes.

As we do each year, the members of the school improvement committee have met to analyze our school and make any changes we deem necessary to the improvement process.  To improve our students’ reading skills, we will be implementing a new phonics instruction program for grades K-2. This program is called “Reading Horizons”.  We will use it to provide structured daily phonics lessons to ALL students in those grades.  Another ongoing problem that we have noted is the poor attendance of many of our students.  When students are absent, key instruction is missed and those students typically fall behind.  PLEASE have your child here each day unless they are ill or there is a legitimate emergency. If your student is ill, they will be required to make up work that they missed. Please call to inform us if your child is ill or if they will be absent.     

We have also decided to make it mandatory for all visitors to the school to check in at the office and then wear a visitor’s badge.

When you visit the school this year, you will notice another new portable classroom.  Lake View is using this new portable to house our new computer lab.  This will give us two computer labs.  A few teachers have also moved to different classrooms to allow us to better collaborate.        

            We believe that an orderly, safe environment is essential for students to learn and achieve academically.  To promote this type of environment, we will continue to use our discipline program.  Students can earn blue slips by demonstrating outstanding behavior.  They may also be given a white slip when their behavior is not so great.  The rules we expect students to follow when they are not in class:

·         FOLLOW DIRECTIONS THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE GIVEN

·         PUT OTHERS UP NOT DOWN

·         KEEP HANDS, FEET, MOUTH AND OBJECTS TO YOURSELF

·         ALWAYS BE IN THE PROPER PLACE or HAVE A HALL PASS

·         ALWAYS WALK IN THE BUILDING

·         USE ALL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT PROPERLY

Greeting Everyone!

This has been a great year! I would like to tell you a little bit about our students’ hard work and success in math so far this year.  At our school, we use the SMI,(scholastic math inventory), to assess our students’ performance in math.  We test all students in grades 2-5 at the beginning, middle and end of the year.  Everyone took the test for the second time in December and we have achieved some great results.  The test is computer based and it is adaptive.  It measures a student’s present level of performance with points.  Here is how we are doing.  All of these scores are averages for the grade level:

Important note: Grades 2-4 are expected to grow 150 points in one full year of school.  We have not even finished half the year and look how much growth we have already achieved!!!

5^th grade is only expected to grow 85 points in one full school year!!  That’s right, we have already surpassed that!

Dual Immersion Lottery

The application deadline for the 2014 first grade dual-immersion program was February 14, 2014.  At the deadline, Lake View had received over 90 applications.  Unfortunately, we can only accept 60 students into the first grade program.  We are grateful for the interest in our Spanish dual-immersion program.  Because of the large numbers of applications we received, a lottery was held at the district office on February 20^th.  The lottery was conducted by Mary Kay Kirkland, assistant superintendent, as well as other district staff members.  The lottery was witnessed by several parents and other school staff members.  A letter has been sent home to each applicant informing them of the results.  If you have been selected in the lottery, you must contact the school to confirm that you will accept enrollment in the first grade dual-immersion program.  If you have questions, please contact the principal.

Dual Immersion Opportunity at Lake View Elementary

   Beginning in 1^st grade, your child can learn all of the standard grade level curriculum in addition to learning to speak, read and write in Spanish.    Lake View will be hosting a parent meeting on January 9^th at 6:30 PM.  Come to the meeting or visit the link on our web-site to learn more.     Enrollment in dual-immersion at Lake View is open to any student in the district.  You need to submit an application for your child to be considered.  The application is available on our web-site or on the district web-site.  Applications are due by February 14^th.  So, even if you don’t have a first grader, tell your friends, neighbors and relatives about dual-immersion at Lake View!
