Dual Immersion News

The dual immersion open enrollment window for current kindergarten students will be from January 1 thru March 4.  All applications must be submitted on-line.  Watch for a letter coming home in a few weeks.

There will be a general parent meeting regarding the dual-immersion programs offered by the district at Century Elementary on January 6th at 6:00.

There will also be a dual-immersion meeting for our current 5th grade dual immersion students at ACYI on December 16th.  This meeting will help to inform parents about what to expect from dual immersion in 6th grade at ACYI.

Principal's Message for December

Parents,

I hope you all are having a nice holiday season.  We truly appreciate working with your awesome children!

The weather has turned cold and it looks like winter is really here.  Please make sure your child brings a warm coat to school each day.  We still have some students saying they don’t have a coat to wear out to recess.

Please speak with your children about the need to cough into their elbow and that they should wash their hands frequently.  We have had a lot of sick students lately!

Also, please continue to help us out by making sure that students are here for school each day and that they arrive on time.  Attendance is a major factor towards school success.  Students who miss a lot of days or who are late often, usually fall behind their peers.  We hate to see this happen and it is usually easy to avoid.

Please remember that school will be out from December 24th thru January 3rd.  We will be back in school on January 4th.  It is also important to remember that December 23rd will be a minimal day.  School will end at 12:30 on that day.

Thanks,

Mark Johnson

Principal's Message for November

Hello Parents!
I hope you had a fun Halloween!  I saw lots of you at the carnival and it seemed like everyone was having a good time.  We are so lucky to have such a strong PTA at our school.  Our PTA planned the entire carnival.  We are also grateful to the high school volunteers who came and helped out.
I want to make sure you know about a few other things going on here at school.  Our teachers have been involved in some exciting projects designed to improve our students’ academic growth.  One important project has been the creation of math curriculum maps.  The teachers have spent quite a few hours creating curriculum maps that guide their instruction for the whole school year.  The maps are based on the state standards and help the teachers establish how topics will be taught and at what pace and what will be tested and when.  They also establish what skills need to be mastered before moving on.  The teachers have also planned math tasking activities that are being done regularly in every classroom.
Our teachers have also been learning more about depth of knowledge in instruction.  Depth of knowledge, or DOK, is a concept that teachers use to help them guide students into deeper thinking and problem solving.  We believe that DOK is critical to prepare students for higher education and the competitive world they will be entering.
If you have any questions about these concepts or anything else at our school, please give me a call!
